In 2019, Santa Claus is eco friendly

Because Christmas always rhymes with shopping frenzy, because we obviously want to please our loved ones, but also because we are aware that some products are the result of a manufacturing process that is disadvantageous, even harmful to humans and the environment, here are a few gestures to keep in mind when you go for an eco-responsible Christmas shopping.

Choose gifts from craftsmen, designers, and committed ethical brands

With regard to fast fashion, as environmental and human awareness increases, so happens with fashion brands. More and more designers are proposing sustainable, ethical and responsible alternatives, and that's good!

Céline, fashion and ethics blogger, had a great idea, she listed all these brands in "The generator of Marqu'iz". She created a browser that allows you to find what you're looking for thanks to her own ethical and eco-responsible criteria and the type of product you're after!

Use recyclable or fabric wrapping paper

Nothing more beautiful than personalized wrapping paper! There are several choices available to us. Recycled and recyclable kraft paper is a good alternative for anyone who wants paper that tears in the hurry. You can also use newspapers from abroad (in a foreign language) or simply nice publications. The prize for sophistication and the "wow" effect will surely come with the Japanese art of Furoshiki, which consists of wrapping your gifts with beautiful fabrics.

And the tree? How do we not depart from tradition and stay green at Christmas 2019?

Testimonies and references disagree on the origin of the Christmas tree. Some believe it to be long before our era, others in more modern times... What is certain is that this tradition is well established and has been awaited every year for centuries!

Here are some very interesting facts about the current use of Christmas trees in the UK:

  1. Around 8 million Christmas trees are sold each year in the UK.
  2. There are three main varieties of Christmas tree: Pine, Spruce and Noble Fir. The Pine takes 5 years to grow, the Spruce 7 years and the Noble Fir 10 years.
  3. Artificial trees damage the environment. They last for less than six years in your home, but for centuries in a landfill.
  4. An acre of Christmas trees provides 18 people the daily oxygen they need

And, if you’re in England then the Forestry Commission has Christmas tree sales centres where you can buy a sustainably grown, local tree.

So what are the alternatives?

Create a Christmas atmosphere without a tree, with a dedicated space!

Nothing easier. You can simply collect branches of dead wood and assemble them in the shape of a fir tree with string. Add a light garland, pine cones, various decorative elements and you're done!

Even simpler and more refined

Why not give your holiday lights strand the shape of a tree and position it, like a painting, on a central wall ?!

The lack of fir is still felt?

You can opt for a tree grown in the rules of the art, that is to say in reasoned and controlled cultivation, and plant it before it loses all its needles! Tip: Opt for potted or rooted fir, with its roots.

No more excuses with all these ideas. Bring together customs and ecology!
